R&B/Soul, Music, World, Contemporary R&B
Ever since his 2000 debut album Aijuswanaseing, Philly singer Musiq Soulchild has been one of the preeminent voices in the neo-soul movement, scoring many hit singles, selling millions of units, and racking up a slew of awards from BET, ASCAP, and Soul Train, among others. Musiqinthemagiq is his sixth album, and first release since 2008’s On My Radio. On it, he continues his signature style of throwback R&B vocalism, understated production, and completely ignoring the use of spaces between words on song titles. With only one guest spot (Swizz Beatz on “Anything”), he is free to do his own thing on every track, and is especially impressive on joints like “Sayido,” “Backtowhere,” the extra retro “Lovecontract,” and “Dowehaveto.” The subject matter is pretty much exclusively about love, sensuality, and romance, and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
